After King Parikshit ascended the throne, the Pandavas, feeling the time had come to retire from worldly duties, decided to renounce the kingdom.
Yudhishthira, the eldest, crowned Parikshit and prepared for his departure along with his brothers and Draupadi.
The Pandavas, who had been guided and protected by Lord Krishna throughout their lives, felt deep sorrow at His departure from this world. Realizing the transient nature of life and the futility of earthly attachments, they chose the path of detachment, embarking on their final journey to the Himalayas in search of liberation.
This departure marked the end of an era, the closing of the great Mahabharata story, as the Pandavas relinquished all their earthly possessions and titles.
The verse that reflects their departure is:
*"Thus, giving up everything that bound them to this world, the Pandavas followed the path of righteousness and detachment, seeking only the divine presence of the Lord."*
Their departure was an example of living a life fully aligned with dharma and surrendering to the Supreme at the right time, knowing all actions are ultimately in the Lord's hands.
